Worm Hunt โ€” A Multiplayer Snake Battle Royale You Can Play Right Now

Published October 19, 2022 ยท Last updated March 16, 2026 ยท Reviewed by BooBoo Editorial on April 23, 2026

Introduction

Worm Hunt - Snake game iO zone is a browser-based multiplayer .io game that puts a battle royale spin on the classic snake formula. Developed by Peaky Muzzle, a game studio based in Warsaw, Poland, the game drops you into arenas with over 100 other players where you control a colorful segmented worm. Your goal: eat scattered food items called "yummies," grow longer than everyone else, and force opponents to crash into your body. The game currently holds an 8.5/10 rating from 10,406 votes on CrazyGames and has been downloaded over 50 million times across all platforms.

Unlike simple snake clones that recycle the Nokia-era formula, Worm Hunt adds five distinct game modes, a booster system, cosmetic skins, and real-time leaderboards that track 136+ concurrent players in a single arena. It runs directly in your browser with no download and no signup.

Hands-On: What It's Actually Like to Play

The following describes our editorial team's firsthand playtest on April 23, 2026.

After clicking past the GamePix splash screen, the game loads a developer splash (the Peaky Muzzle cat logo) with a "...LOADING..." indicator. An in-game "Terms of Service and Privacy" dialog appears, linking to https://www.peakymuzzle.com/privacy-policy/. Once accepted, you land on a vibrant blue-purple gradient main menu featuring an animated worm character with a clown-like face. The HUD immediately shows your progress (0%), currency counters (0 coins, 0 diamonds), and event timers reading "16d 18h" and "6d 6h" for active in-game events.

Before each round, a "CHOOSE BOOSTERS:" panel lets you equip up to three items from your inventory. Each booster showed a quantity of "3" in our fresh account, suggesting a starter pack. Below that sits the central "PLAY!" button.

Clicking PLAY opens the mode selection: "Choose a game mode" with five cards. We chose Endless mode โ€” described as "Gain maximum weight of the worm" with no time limit. The other unlocked options were Hocus Pocus (10 minutes, "Collect stars and exchange them for gifts"), Timed mode (5 minutes, "Defeat everyone in the allotted time"), and Gems fever (10 minutes, gem collection). A fifth mode, Gold Rush, was locked behind level 5.

The arena loaded instantly. A leaderboard in the top-left showed "Top (alive: 136)" with the leading player "Braveheart" at 1,031,824 points. Our worm spawned as a small yellow segmented creature in a blue ocean-like field, and a mission banner appeared: "Eat 200 yummies in 1 min 30 sec" with a countdown timer.

Mouse control is immediate โ€” the worm head follows wherever you point the cursor, turning smoothly with no perceptible input lag. Scattered across the arena are "yummies" โ€” small emoji-faced creatures in red, pink, orange, and blue โ€” that add segments to your worm and trigger score popups like "+25" and "+110" as you collect them. Power-up icons float at the top of the screen: a speed boost (">>"), a treasure chest, and a numbered ability ("3").

After 59 seconds of collecting food and dodging larger worms, a massive blue segmented worm cut across our path and we collided head-first into its body. The Result screen appeared: position #79 out of 136, weight 5,089 KG, 6 coins collected, 0 worms defeated, lifetime 59 seconds, distance 62m. Two buttons offered the choice: a blue "Home" button or a green "+ 250 coins" button with a film clapperboard icon (rewarded video ad).

How to Play / Controls

Worm Hunt uses mouse-only controls in the browser version:

  • Move: The worm follows your mouse cursor position. Point left to turn left, point far ahead to go straight.
  • Speed boost: Click and hold the left mouse button (or press Space) to activate a temporary speed burst. This consumes part of your worm's body as fuel, shortening you.
  • Collision rules: If your worm's head hits another worm's body, you die and your segments scatter as food. If another worm hits your body, they die instead.
  • Growth: Eat the colored emoji creatures ("yummies") scattered around the arena or the food dropped by defeated worms.

The controls work identically on mobile via touch โ€” drag your finger to steer, tap and hold for boost.

Strategy Tips (From Our Playthrough)

These tips are specific to Worm Hunt's mechanics and apply across all game modes:

1. Circle smaller worms to trap them. When you spot a worm shorter than yours, loop around it in a tight spiral. As the circle closes, the trapped worm has no escape route and will inevitably collide with your body. This is the primary elimination technique and how top-ranked players accumulate mass quickly.

2. Hug the edges of the arena early, then move inward. The arena center is where most collisions happen because food density is highest there. At spawn, your worm is tiny and vulnerable. Stick to the outer edges, grow safely to mid-size (around 5,000+ KG), then move toward the center where the bigger food drops from defeated worms are.

3. Never boost in a straight line near large worms. Speed boosting shortens your body โ€” which is your only defense. If you boost past a large worm and your body shrinks too much, you lose the ability to block or circle anyone. Save boosts for escaping dead-end situations, not for chasing food.

4. Prioritize defeated-worm food chains over scattered yummies. When a worm dies, its body explodes into a dense line of high-value food. Rushing to these food chains is far more efficient than collecting individual yummies (+25 each). A single large worm kill can yield 50,000+ points of food, but other players will converge on it too โ€” be ready to dodge.

5. In Timed mode, play aggressively after the arena shrinks. Timed mode uses a battle-royale shrinking arena. Once the play area contracts, surviving worms are forced closer together. At this point, defensive coiling beats active hunting โ€” let panicking smaller worms crash into you.

How Worm Hunt Compares to Similar Games

Worm Hunt sits in a competitive field of snake .io games. Here is how it stacks up:

GamePlatformRatingKey Difference
Worm Hunt (this game)CrazyGames, GamePix, SilverGames8.5/10 (10,406 votes)5 game modes, battle royale shrinking arena, booster system
Slither.ioslither.ioClassicThe original browser snake .io; simpler, no modes or progression
Worms Zone (same developer)CrazyGames, GamePixPopularSimilar mechanics, different art style, shared Peaky Muzzle DNA
Wormate.iowormate.ioEstablishedMore power-ups, different visual theme, similar arena size
Snake.ioVariousWidely playedSimpler graphics, fewer features, faster load times

Worm Hunt's main differentiator is mode variety โ€” the five game modes (especially the battle-royale Timed mode with its shrinking arena) give it more replay value than single-mode competitors. The cosmetic progression system with skins, the booster loadout screen, and the event timers also add layers that pure arcade snake games lack.

What Other Players Say

The game has accumulated ratings across multiple platforms:

  • CrazyGames: 8.5/10 from 10,406 votes โ€” 8,812 upvotes, 1,594 downvotes, roughly 85% approval (source)
  • SilverGames: 4.0/5 from 406 votes (source)
  • BrightestGames: 4.25/5 from 53 votes (source)

The 15% downvote rate on CrazyGames is notable. Common criticisms in the snake .io genre include repetitive gameplay loops and aggressive ad placement between rounds. The rewarded video ad we encountered (offering +250 coins for watching) is optional rather than forced, which is a positive distinction from competitors that insert mandatory interstitials.

The game is also distributed on Y8, GameDistribution, 1001Games, Agame, Miniplay, Friv2Online, and IOGames.games, demonstrating wide platform reach. Multiple YouTube gameplay videos exist, with the most viewed being "Worm Hunt - Snake game iO zone Gameplay" published March 2025.

Our Verdict

Worm Hunt delivers a polished take on the snake .io genre with enough additions to justify its existence alongside Slither.io and Wormate.io. The five game modes โ€” particularly the battle-royale Timed mode where the arena shrinks โ€” provide genuine variety that most competitors lack. The visual style is bright and readable, controls are responsive, and the 136-player arenas feel populated without being unplayable.

However, the game has real downsides. The pre-game flow involves a Terms of Service dialog with a clickable privacy policy link that can accidentally navigate you away from the game entirely. Currency earn rates are painfully slow โ€” we earned 6 coins in a full 59-second round, while skins and upgrades cost hundreds or thousands. The Gold Rush mode being locked behind level 5 means new players see content they cannot access. And in Endless mode, sudden death from a large worm cutting across your path with no warning indicator can feel arbitrary rather than fair.

Best for: Fans of Slither.io looking for more modes and progression, casual multiplayer sessions, mobile browser players. Not for: Players who want deep strategic depth or dislike repetitive eat-grow-die loops.
