Sort It: The Ball-Sort Puzzle That Shows You Your Legal Moves

The Short Version

Sort It is Famobi's take on the ball-sort formula: tubes of mixed-color balls, sort every tube to a single color, using empties as workspace. What earns it a review next to the hundred other sorters is one design decision we haven't seen executed this cleanly elsewhere: pick up a ball and the game marks every tube with a live green ✓ or red X — your legal moves, shown before you commit. It turns the genre's usual trial-and-error tapping into actual planning, and it's exactly the kind of small kindness that separates a built game from a cloned one.

We played it across five sessions. It boots fast, plays clean, and beat our scripted test rig fair and square — details below, honestly.

What We Verified Hands-On

Straight into the game. No menu maze: the embed loads Level 1 directly, with a tutorial hand showing the first move. Level counter top-left, settings gear top-right, dark patterned background that stays out of the way.

The hover-pick loop. Tap a tube and its top ball lifts and hovers; tap a target to drop it. While the ball hovers, every tube shows its legality marker — red X where the drop is illegal, green ✓ where it's allowed (same-color top or an empty). Tap the source tube again and the ball settles back down, no penalty.

The help economy. Three consumables sit on the left rail, each ×2 per level in our sessions: undo, hint, and add-a-tube — the last one being the genre's classic get-out-of-a-corner button. We didn't need the hint on Level 1's three-color board, but the add-tube option is the difference between a dead end and a comeback in later levels.

Real sorting, on camera. Across our scripted runs we fully sorted the pattern-ball tube in one session and the yellow tube in another — the completed-tube states are in our evidence screenshots.

The Honest Caveat

Our test rig plays with scripted click timing, and Sort It's pour animations swallowed rapid clicks — sequences drifted, and no single scripted session cleared Level 1 end-to-end despite solving individual tubes on camera. A human tapping at human speed won't hit this; it's a rig limitation, not a game defect. But it means our review covers the mechanics, UX, and economies first-hand, while the deeper level curve is described from the genre's conventions rather than a long climb we performed.

Ads, Honestly

The standard web build attempts a pre-roll ad after the splash screen's play button — expect a skippable video before the game in normal browsing. In our sessions we saw no mid-level interruptions: once you're sorting, you're sorting. This page's embed is ad-supported, which is what keeps it free.

Who It's For

Ball-sort is the lunch-break genre par excellence, and this is a considerate build of it: no account, no menu friction, legal moves shown up front, and an undo when your plan collapses. If you already burned through our Water Sort review, this is the same brain-itch with balls instead of liquids — and honestly better move-planning UX.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Sort It free to play?

Yes — it's an official Famobi HTML5 build, free and ad-supported, running in your browser with no download or account.

How do I know which moves are allowed?

Pick up a ball and the game shows you: a green check on every tube that can take it (matching top color or empty), a red X on every tube that can't. Tap the source tube again to put the ball back.

What do the three buttons on the left do?

Undo reverses your last move, hint suggests a move, and add-a-tube inserts an extra empty tube when you've sorted yourself into a corner. Each showed a ×2 stock per level in our sessions.

Does Sort It work on my phone?

Yes — it's a mobile-ready, tap-only game and runs in any modern mobile browser. Touch is arguably its native language; the desktop mouse works exactly the same way.

Our Verdict

The ball-sort genre lives or dies on respect for the player's time, and Sort It respects it: instant start, visible legal moves, a fair help economy, and clean animations. It out-stubborned our test rig's click timing, which we note with professional respect. If sorting is your five-minute reset, this is a properly built place to do it.

Play Sort It

The game is embedded at the top of this page — it drops you straight into Level 1; follow the tutorial hand and watch for the green checks.
