BlindBat โ€” A Pixel-Art Bat Shooter with an Ammo Twist

Published November 17, 2022 ยท Last updated November 22, 2022 ยท Reviewed by BooBoo Editorial on May 12, 2026

Introduction

BlindBat is a 2D side-scrolling arcade shooter built with Construct 3 by indie developer PitiGameDev. You control a purple bat wearing oversized goggles as it flies through scrolling biomes, shooting birds and managing a limited ammunition supply. The core hook is the ammo system: every direct hit returns your bullet, but every miss costs you a round permanently. Run out of ammo and the birds turn hostile. The game launched on GamePix in November 2022 and currently holds an 8.4/10 rating from 203 votes on the platform, with a 93.6% approval rate.

The premise is simple enough to pick up in seconds, but the ammunition management adds a layer of tension missing from most tap-and-fly games. Sessions run 30 seconds to 3 minutes depending on your aim.

Hands-On: What It's Actually Like to Play

The following describes our editorial team's firsthand playtest on May 12, 2026.

After clicking through the GamePix consent banner and the green "ๅฅฝ๏ผŒๅผ€ๅง‹ๆธธๆˆ!" button, the game loads into its title screen in about 10 seconds. The main menu presents the game's name in bold stylized text โ€” "BLIND" in pink-purple block letters and "BAT" in teal โ€” with the bat character hanging upside down from a branch, wearing its signature goggles. A "BEST SCORE:0000000" counter sits at the bottom, and a large purple play button occupies the lower center.

Tapping the play button launches you straight into action. The bat drops from its branch and begins auto-scrolling to the right across a layered pixel-art landscape. The first biome features a blue sky with fluffy clouds, green mountains, and scattered trees. Within seconds, enemy birds โ€” green ones with crowns, blue ones, and yellow variants โ€” begin flying in from the right side of the screen.

The HUD is minimal and readable: "SCORE:0000000" in the top-right corner (white pixel font on a colored sky), a row of yellow orbs representing your lives in the top-left next to the bat's portrait, and sound/video toggle buttons in the top center. As I flew and clicked to shoot, the score ticked up: 90 points for the first few hits, climbing to "SCORE:0000210" within about 30 seconds of active play.

The backgrounds shift as you progress. After the blue-sky mountains, the palette transitioned to a red and pink sunset with purple mountains and different vegetation. Then came a vivid green biome with autumn-colored trees. Each transition is smooth โ€” no loading stutter โ€” and gives the runs visual variety despite the repetitive core loop.

When I missed a shot, one of my yellow life orbs turned black. By the green biome, I had lost two orbs. A golden collectible box appeared mid-flight; flying into it seemed to award bonus points. The enemy birds came in increasingly tight formations โ€” groups of three or four at staggered heights โ€” forcing split-second decisions about which to target and which to dodge.

How to Play / Controls

BlindBat uses a single input: click or tap anywhere on the screen. Each click fires a projectile at the nearest bird. The bat auto-scrolls horizontally; you do not control movement directly. The bat also rises and falls slightly based on game physics, and tapping may also affect altitude.

The key mechanic โ€” pulled from the GamePix description โ€” is that "whenever the bat lands a direct hit, the bullet returns to him." Miss, and that ammunition is gone. When your ammo runs dry, the birds become aggressive and attack the bat directly.

There are no keyboard controls. The game is designed for mouse on desktop and touch on mobile, in landscape orientation. Response time feels snappy โ€” under 100ms between click and projectile fire.

Strategy Tips (From Our Playthrough)

These tips are specific to BlindBat's ammo-recovery mechanic and enemy patterns:

1. Prioritize close-range shots over long-range potshots. The bullet-return mechanic means accuracy is survival. Birds at the edge of the screen are harder to hit, and a miss permanently drains your ammo pool. Wait until enemies are within the middle third of the screen before firing.

2. Target isolated birds first, then clusters. When three green crowned birds fly in a diagonal formation, pick off the lone one at the top or bottom rather than shooting into the cluster. Cluster shots risk hitting nothing if the birds shift vertically between frames.

3. Watch for golden collectible boxes and fly into them. These boxes appear periodically during flight and award bonus points. They do not require shooting โ€” just positioning. Prioritize collecting them during lulls between enemy waves.

4. Conserve ammo during biome transitions. When the background palette shifts (blue to red, red to green), there is a brief window with fewer enemies on screen. Use this gap to reposition rather than waste shots on distant targets.

5. Accept that life orbs will deplete โ€” manage the rate. You start with 8-10 yellow orbs. Losing one or two early is normal. The goal is to maintain enough orbs to survive increasingly dense bird waves. A controlled loss rate of one orb per 200-300 points is sustainable for a decent run.

How BlindBat Compares to Similar Games

BlindBat occupies a niche between tap-to-fly games and ammo-management shooters. Here is how it stacks up:

GamePlatformRatingKey Difference
BlindBat (this game)GamePix, Y8, Yombie8.4/10 (GamePix)Ammo-return mechanic; miss = permanent loss
Flap Up Gamegames.json catalogAvailablePure tap-to-fly; no shooting or ammo management

BlindBat's differentiator is the ammunition economy: most tap-to-fly and side-scrolling bird games are purely about dodging or tapping. The shoot-and-recover loop adds a resource-management dimension that rewards precision over reflexes alone.

What Other Players Say

Community coverage for BlindBat is limited. The game has no Reddit threads, no YouTube gameplay videos, and no blog or editorial reviews as of May 2026. The available data comes from portal ratings:

  • GamePix: 8.4/10 from 203 votes โ€” 190 upvotes, 13 downvotes, 93.6% approval (source)
  • Yombie: 5/5 from 70 votes, 100% approval (source)
  • PacoGames: 91% developer average across 62 games (source)

Total estimated plays across all platforms sit around 640 โ€” this is a niche title. The approval rate of 93.6% on GamePix is solid for an indie arcade game, but the low play count means the rating is based on a small sample. Yombie's perfect 5/5 likely reflects an even smaller and self-selecting audience rather than universal acclaim.

The game is notably absent from CrazyGames, Poki, GameDistribution, and BrightestGames โ€” the four largest HTML5 game portals. This limits its discoverability and explains the low play volume.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is BlindBat free to play? Yes. BlindBat runs entirely in your browser with no download, no account, and no purchase required. The game monetizes through ads served by the GamePix network.

What are the controls for BlindBat? Click or tap anywhere on the screen to fire at birds. The bat scrolls automatically โ€” you control shooting and positioning, not horizontal movement. Mouse on desktop, touch on mobile.

How does the ammo system work in BlindBat? When you hit a bird, the bullet returns to the bat and you keep your ammo count. When you miss, that bullet is lost permanently. If you run out of ammunition entirely, the birds become aggressive and attack you directly.

Does BlindBat work on mobile? Yes. The game is designed for landscape orientation and plays in mobile browsers. Controls are tap-based and responsive.

How long is a typical BlindBat run? A beginner run lasts 30-60 seconds. With practice and careful ammo management, runs can extend to 2-3 minutes. The game is an endless format with no fixed endpoint โ€” it loops through different biome backgrounds until all lives are lost.

Who developed BlindBat? PitiGameDev (Pierpaolo), a solo indie developer with 62+ published HTML5 games. BlindBat was built with Construct 3 and released on November 17, 2022.

Our Verdict

BlindBat is a competent pixel-art arcade shooter that does one thing well: it adds an ammo-recovery mechanic to the familiar fly-and-dodge formula. The "SCORE:0000210" satisfaction of nailing a precise shot and seeing your bullet return is genuinely rewarding, and the biome-shifting backgrounds keep runs visually fresh.

However, the game has real limitations. The core loop โ€” fly right, shoot birds, manage ammo โ€” wears thin after a few sessions because there is no progression system, no unlockables, and no variation beyond cosmetic background changes. The collision detection occasionally feels unfair; the bat's hitbox appears slightly larger than its sprite, leading to hits from birds that look like near-misses. At only 640 total plays across all platforms after three and a half years, the game has clearly not found a broad audience. And the lack of any tutorial or instructions means new players must figure out the ammo mechanic by trial and error โ€” a friction point for a genre that lives and dies on instant accessibility.

Best for: Fans of retro arcade shooters, players who enjoy precision-based mechanics, quick break sessions. Not for: Players looking for depth, progression, or originality beyond a single mechanic twist on the Flappy Bird formula.
