Phantom: A Side-Scrolling Space Shooter With Four Weapons and No Mercy
The Short Version
Phantom is a side-scrolling space shooter that came out on July 14, 2026 โ nine days before we played it. You fly one small fighter across an endless star field, hold down the space bar, and try to stay alive while progressively nastier aliens fill the screen.
Our first run ended at 90 points, early into Level 2. Our second run ended at 825. Same keyboard, same player, ten minutes apart. That gap is the whole review in one number: this game kills you quickly, and then it teaches you why.
A word about ratings up front, because we would rather say it than bury it: Phantom currently sits at 6/10 from four votes on GamePix. Four. That is not a verdict, that is a rounding error, and we are not going to dress it up as community consensus. This review rests on our own two runs and on what the game actually put on screen โ nothing else.
Hands-On: What It's Actually Like to Play
The following describes our editorial team's firsthand playtest on July 23, 2026.
The path to actual gameplay runs through four screens, which is two more than we would like: a GamePix start gate, the neon PHANTOM title card, a controls picker, and then a full-page manual. The good news is that nothing here is an ad wall โ the game loads promptly, and the only thing standing between you and the ship is your own patience for menus.
The controls picker is worth the click: Keyboard (WASD + Space + Ctrl + Alt) or Touch (on-screen buttons). It asks up front instead of guessing, which is more courtesy than most browser shooters extend.
Then comes the manual, and it is genuinely dense โ six panels covering controls, four weapons with individual cooldowns, four shields, seven enemy types with point values, and the level system. Our honest reaction was that this is a lot of systems for a game you are about to lose in ninety seconds. Read the controls panel, skim the rest, and let the game teach you the part that matters.
The Loop
You start with 3 lives, 100% resistance, Weapon 1, no shield. Enemies stream in from the right. You move, you shoot, your resistance bar drains as you take hits, and when it hits zero you lose a life. Every 1,000 points is a new level, and every level is harder than the one before it.
The flying is the best part. Our reviewer's summary was "ๆๆ่ทๆ" โ the ship goes where you put it, immediately, with no float and no input lag to fight. In a genre where a mushy ship ruins everything, Phantom's fighter feels agile in the way that makes you blame yourself instead of the controls when you die.
And you will die. The reviewer's one complaint, unprompted: "ๆญป็ๅคชๅฟซ" โ you die too fast. In both of our runs, the resistance bar went from comfortable to gone faster than felt fair, ground down by fire from enemies we were still learning to read. There is no gentle opening stretch here.
What We Didn't Get To
Neither run lasted long enough for us to press Ctrl and switch weapons. That is an honest failure of the playtest and also a fact about the game: it hands you a four-weapon arsenal with individually tuned cooldowns and then keeps you too busy staying alive to use it. Same for the shields โ four types, 60-second durations, and we never spent one. If you are better than us, that entire layer is waiting for you.
What Surprised Us
- The retry loop is clean. Death screen reads
GAME OVER / Final Score / PLAY AGAIN, and in our sessions the retry button worked immediately โ no interstitial ad standing between you and the next attempt. For a score-chasing arcade game, that matters more than it sounds. - Your record sticks around. The title screen shows
RECORD: 825after our second run. Small touch, big effect: the next run has a target instead of a blank slate. - The difficulty curve is learnable, not random. Going 90 โ 825 on the second attempt is the proof. Nothing about our setup changed; we just started reading the enemy patterns.
- The star field is pretty and quiet. Drifting planets, no clutter, no flashing banner across the play area. It reads as retro without going overboard on scanline nostalgia.
Strategy Tips (From Our Playthrough)
1. Resistance is your real health bar โ watch it, not your lives. Three lives sounds generous until you learn that each one evaporates when resistance hits 0%. Both of our runs ended this way. Track that percentage in the HUD like it is the only number on screen.
2. Learn to leave, not to trade. Our instinct was to sit in the enemy stream and out-shoot it. That instinct is what got us to 90 points. The 825 run came from moving more and firing less โ the ship is agile enough that dodging is almost always available to you.
3. Actually press Ctrl โ you have four weapons and we wasted all of them. Per the manual: W1 is continuous fire, W2 (Heat) does extra damage to robots on a 6-second cooldown, W3 (Ice) freezes enemies for 3 seconds on a 3-second cooldown, W4 (Reverse) inverts direction on a 2-second cooldown. Ice on a crowded screen looks like the obvious panic button, and we never once used it.
4. Prioritize by point value, because the manual tells you what everything is worth. Brak 10, Moltar 20, Zorak 25, Metalus 30 (the zigzag one, genuinely annoying), King 40 (a tank with three lives), Spider boss 100. Levels come every 1,000 points, so killing three Kings is worth twelve Braks โ hunt accordingly when you have the room.
5. Boss kills buy lives. Three bosses defeated earns you an extra life, and Super Bosses show up every ten levels with no weapon cooldowns at all. That is the long game. We never saw it, but it is the reason to keep pressing PLAY AGAIN.
How Phantom Compares to Similar Games
| Phantom | Classic shmups (Galaga lineage) | Most browser space shooters | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pace | Fast, unforgiving from minute one | Fast, but with a slow first wave | Usually gentler openings |
| Systems depth | 4 weapons + 4 shields + 7 enemy types | Usually 1 weapon, power-ups | Typically 1โ2 weapons |
| Onboarding | Full manual page, no in-play tutorial | Learn by dying | Learn by dying |
| Session length | 1โ3 minutes per run at our skill level | 5โ15 minutes | 2โ10 minutes |
| Retry friction | Immediate PLAY AGAIN in our sessions | N/A | Often an ad per retry |
The closest thing we have already reviewed is Star Wing; if what you want is the shooting rather than the flying, Alpha Guns scratches it from the ground.
Who Made It
We could not tell you, and we looked. There is no developer or studio credited on the GamePix listing, on the title screen, in the controls picker, in the manual, or on the game-over screen. The listing's publisher of record is GamePix s.r.l. (Via Marsala 29h, Rome, Italy), which is the distributor, not the author.
For a game this competently tuned, the anonymity is odd, and we would rather flag it than pretend we ran down an attribution we never found. If you made Phantom, we would genuinely like to credit you โ tell us and we will update this page.
What Players Are Saying
Almost nothing, honestly. Phantom has 4 votes on GamePix, averaging 6/10, and that is the only score that exists. We went looking for corroboration on the portals we normally cross-check โ CrazyGames, Poki, Y8, Kongregate, itch.io โ and came back with nothing usable: at nine days old, this game has not been picked up and rated anywhere else yet.
Normally that failure would stop a review here. We are publishing anyway, and saying plainly why: with no external consensus to lean on, everything above rests on our own two runs. Treat the 6/10 as noise. Treat us as one data point, not a verdict.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Phantom free to play? Yes. It runs free in the browser with no download and no account. GamePix's monetization means an ad can appear around the session, though in our two runs nothing interrupted the retry loop.
What are the controls? WASD or arrow keys to move, Space to shoot, Ctrl to switch weapons, Alt to activate a shield, Enter to pause. On mobile there are on-screen buttons for all of it โ the game asks which you want before it starts.
Is it hard? Yes, immediately. Our first run scored 90 points. Our second scored 825. Expect to lose several runs before it clicks, and expect that to be the appeal rather than the problem.
Does it save my progress? It saves your high score locally โ the title screen shows your record between runs. There is no account, no cloud save, and no level select.
Does it work on a phone? GamePix lists it as landscape, desktop and mobile, with touch controls built in. We played on desktop with a keyboard, so we have not verified the touch layout ourselves.
Our Verdict
Play it if you want a shooter that respects your reflexes, punishes you fast, and hands you a record to beat. The flying is genuinely good โ agile, immediate, no float โ and the systems underneath (four weapons on separate cooldowns, four shields, escalating bosses) are deeper than this genre usually bothers with in a browser tab.
Skip it if you want to ease in. There is no gentle first wave. Our reviewer's blunt summary was that you die too fast, and that is the honest first impression: the game expects you to lose several runs as tuition.
However โ and this is the part that decided the review โ after dying twice, the reaction was "้ๅธธๆณๅๆฅไธๆฌก": immediately wanted to go again. A game that kills you in ninety seconds and still makes you reach for PLAY AGAIN has done the only thing an arcade shooter really has to do.
One caveat we will not soften: at four votes, nobody has properly judged this game yet, including us at six minutes of playtime. We think it is good. Come back and tell us if we are wrong.
