We clicked QUICK MATCH and were dropped straight into a match. No team selection, no loading screen — the game picked England vs. Czech Republic and started a 60-second countdown immediately. The gameplay is fast and chaotic. Both characters are oversized bobbleheads that jump high, run in short bursts, and kick the ball with exaggerated physics. The ball bounces off heads, walls, and goalposts unpredictably. Our first goal came from a lucky header when the AI kicked the ball directly at our player's head near the goal — "GOAL!!!" flashed in large white text across the center of the screen, and the score updated to 1:1 between the two national flag icons at the bottom.

The AI opponent is aggressive. Over the course of our Quick Match, the Czech Republic side scored repeatedly, finishing the round at 1:5. The AI chases the ball relentlessly and positions itself well for rebounds, which means new players standing still will lose badly. The supershot (Z key) fires a powered strike with a brief visual effect — it is the primary scoring tool and the most satisfying mechanic in the game.

Each match resets instantly after the 60-second timer runs out. No post-match stats, no replay, no leaderboard. You see the final score and return to the menu. The whole cycle from menu to match to menu takes about 70 seconds.

How to Play / Controls

Football Masters uses keyboard controls for up to two players on the same device:

Player 1:

The controls are simple enough that you can explain them in one sentence: arrow keys to move, X to kick, Z for a powered shot. There is no stamina bar, no special moves beyond the supershot, and no formation tactics. The entire skill expression comes from positioning, jump timing, and knowing when to use the supershot versus the standard kick.

Strategy Tips

These tips come from our April 29, 2026 playtest of Quick Match mode, specifically the England vs. Czech Republic matchup.

1. Position between the ball and your goal, not directly under the ball. New players chase the ball wherever it goes, which leaves the goal wide open for AI rebounds. Instead, stay between the ball and your goalpost. When the ball comes toward you, you are already in a defensive position and can kick it away or head it back. The AI scores most of its goals from uncontested rebounds — cutting off the rebound angle is more effective than chasing.

2. Use the supershot (Z key) only when you have a clear line to the goal. The supershot has a brief wind-up animation that locks your character in place for roughly half a second. Firing it in midfield wastes the opportunity and leaves you stationary while the AI runs past. Save Z for moments when you are within the penalty area and the goalkeeper is displaced — the powered strike is fast enough to beat the AI keeper from close range.

3. Jump-kick for headers near the opponent's goal. The ball in Football Masters bounces high and often floats above both players. Pressing up-arrow and X simultaneously performs a jump-kick that connects with the ball at head height. Near the opponent's goal, a well-timed header redirects the ball downward into the net. Our only goal in the 1:5 match came from exactly this mechanic — the AI lobbed the ball and we redirected it with a jump-kick from three steps out.

4. In 2-Player mode, one player should anchor the defense while the other pushes forward. Quick Match against AI is 1v1 character control, but "2 PLAYERS" mode puts two humans on the same keyboard. The pitch is too short for both players to chase the ball — one should stay near the goal as a permanent sweeper while the other attacks. Communication about who covers and who pushes is the difference between a clean win and a self-inflicted mess.

The "Euro 2020" theming is six years out of date with no updates to reflect recent tournaments, which makes the game feel abandoned even though it technically received an update in April 2025. The 2-player mode is local-only (same keyboard), which limits its social appeal in an era where online multiplayer is the expectation.
