Basketball Stars โ Big-Head NBA Action for Two Players
Published July 2, 2020 ยท Last updated April 1, 2025 ยท Reviewed by BooBoo Editorial on April 23, 2026
The Short Version
Basketball Stars is a browser-based 2D basketball game by Ukrainian indie studio Mad Puffers, the team behind the Moto X3M series and Basketball Legends. You pick from cartoon caricatures of real NBA players โ LeBron James, Stephen Curry, James Harden โ and play 60-second 1v1 or 2v2 matches on one keyboard. On CrazyGames it holds an 8.5/10 from 85,685 player votes, and GamePix rates it 8.8/10 from 41,717 votes.
If you want a quick basketball fix with a friend sitting next to you, this delivers. No account, no download, no waiting.
Hands-On: What It's Actually Like to Play
The following describes our editorial team's firsthand playtest on April 23, 2026.
After accepting the GamePix cookie consent banner and clicking the green "ๅฅฝ๏ผๅผๅงๆธธๆ!" button, the game loads in about 8 seconds โ fast by HTML5 standards. No interstitial ads appeared during our session.
The main menu drops you in front of a purple backdrop with two oversized-head basketball player caricatures flanking a menu board. The options read "1 PLAYER", "2 PLAYERS", "QUICK MATCH", and "CREDITS". A small version tag in the bottom-left corner shows "1.0.9gp", and a music toggle sits in the top-right.
We hit QUICK MATCH. A countdown โ 3, 2, 1 โ and you're on the court. The scoreboard at the top displays two NBA-style team logos, the score, and a 60-second countdown timer. A crowd fills the bleachers behind the court, waving a banner reading "GLHF" (Good Luck, Have Fun). A "MAD PUFFERS" sponsor banner hangs courtside.
The First Match
Our first Quick Match pitted New York Knights against New Orleans. The AI opponent was aggressive โ it stole the ball on our first three possessions and scored from mid-court range. We didn't know the controls (more on that below), and the result was a 0-8 blowout. The game-over screen showed "YOU LOST" with the dejected player crying, a celebratory opponent, and two buttons: "RESTART" and "NEXT".
The Second Match
After restarting, we played more deliberately โ staying closer to the ball carrier and timing our jumps. The second match was closer: 3-4 with 21 seconds left before we lost track of our player position. A green circle marks which character you control, but in the heat of play it is easy to lose your bearings.
What Stood Out
- Match length is sharp โ 60 seconds is just long enough to be competitive, short enough that losses don't sting.
- No tutorial exists. You are expected to figure out WASD controls on your own. The first match will be a learning experience no matter what.
- The AI does not go easy. Even on default difficulty, the computer opponent plays like it wants you to uninstall the game.
- The art style is charming. Big-head characters, exaggerated animations, and a cartoony crowd give this game more personality than most browser sports titles.
How to Play / Controls
Basketball Stars uses keyboard controls โ no mouse needed during gameplay.
Player 1 (left side):
- A / D โ Move left / right
- W โ Jump / Shoot / Block
- S โ Steal / Special action
Player 2 (right side, local 2-player mode):
- Arrow keys โ Movement
- Up Arrow โ Jump / Shoot
- Down Arrow โ Steal
Game Modes:
- 1 Player โ Tournament (bracket-style), Random Match (single AI opponent), Training (practice)
- 2 Players โ Local keyboard-sharing, same screen
- Quick Match โ Instant 1v1 against AI with random teams
Each match lasts exactly 60 seconds. The player with more points when the timer hits zero wins.
Strategy Tips (From Our Playthrough)
These tips come directly from our two-match session and watching how the AI outplayed us:
1. Learn to steal before you learn to score. The S key (or Down Arrow for P2) lets you swipe the ball away from the opponent. The AI uses this constantly โ positioning itself between you and its basket, then stealing on your approach. Do the same to disrupt AI scoring runs.
2. Shoot from mid-court if you cannot get past the defender. The AI's shot accuracy from distance is high. Ours wasn't โ but mid-range shots do go in. Standing at the three-point line and pressing W while holding D toward the basket produces a floater that clears the defender's head more often than driving straight into them.
3. Use the full 60 seconds โ don't rush. Our first match ended 0-8 because we panicked and charged the basket every possession. The clock is generous. Wait for the AI to overcommit on defense, then drive past.
4. In 2-Player mode, one player should always stay on defense. With two human players sharing a keyboard, the temptation is for both to chase the ball. Assign one player as a permanent defender who camps near your own basket. This prevents the easy fast-break scores that the AI exploits.
5. The "SuperShot" mechanic rewards timing over position. According to multiple gameplay videos, a perfectly timed jump shot triggers a special animation โ the SuperShot โ that is harder for the opponent to block. Practice the timing in Training mode before entering tournaments.
How Basketball Stars Compares
Basketball Stars sits in the niche of browser-based, big-head sports arcade games โ a genre Mad Puffers essentially defined with their Legends series.
| Game | Platform | Rating | Key Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basketball Stars (this game) | CrazyGames, GamePix, Poki | 8.5/10 (85k votes) | 60-second matches, WASD controls, cartoon NBA players |
| Basketball Legends 2020 | Y8, CrazyGames | 8.0/10 | Same developer, more characters and tournaments |
| Basket Ball For Two Player | GameMonetize | N/A | Simpler physics, less polished, 2-player only |
| Basketball Stars (Miniclip) | BrightestGames, mobile | 4.77/5 (69 votes) | 3D graphics, online multiplayer, mobile-first โ different game entirely |
| Head Basketball | App stores | 4.4/5 | Mobile-only, similar big-head aesthetic |
The clearest differentiator for Mad Puffers' version is local two-player on the same keyboard โ most modern basketball games assume online multiplayer or single-player only. If you and a friend want to compete on one computer, this is one of the few solid options.
What Other Players Say
Community coverage for Basketball Stars is healthy across game portals:
- CrazyGames: 8.5/10 from 85,685 votes โ 72,929 upvotes, 12,756 downvotes (source). The 15% downvote rate suggests some players find the AI difficulty frustrating or the gameplay repetitive after extended sessions.
- GamePix: 8.8/10 from 41,717 votes โ 36,805 positive, 4,912 negative (source). The highest rating across platforms, with an 88% approval rate.
- Y8: 8.2/10 (source). Y8 also hosts other Mad Puffers sports titles including Hockey Legends (8.6/10) and Tennis Legends (8.7/10).
- YouTube: Active gameplay content exists, including a world-record attempt video showing 1,011 points in Training mode โ confirming a competitive player base.
No Reddit threads or dedicated blog reviews were found for this specific version of Basketball Stars as of April 2026. The game's name overlap with Miniclip's mobile Basketball Stars likely dilutes search visibility.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Basketball Stars free to play? Yes. Basketball Stars runs entirely in your browser โ no download, no account, no purchase. The game is funded through the GamePix ad network.
Can I play Basketball Stars with a friend on the same computer? Yes. Select "2 PLAYERS" from the main menu. Player 1 uses WASD keys and Player 2 uses arrow keys. Both players share the same keyboard and screen.
How long is one match in Basketball Stars? Each match lasts exactly 60 seconds. Including loading and the result screen, a full session takes about 75-80 seconds.
Does Basketball Stars work on mobile? Yes, though the game was designed for keyboard controls. On mobile, touch-based virtual controls replace the keyboard, but the experience is better with a physical keyboard.
Is this the same as the Miniclip Basketball Stars? No. The Miniclip game is a 3D multiplayer mobile app. This Basketball Stars by Mad Puffers is a 2D browser game with cartoon big-head characters and local 2-player support. They share a name but are completely different games.
Are the basketball players real NBA players? The characters are cartoon caricatures that resemble real NBA players (the game mentions LeBron James and Stephen Curry in its description), but they play under fictional team names like "New York Knights" and "New Orleans."
Our Verdict
Basketball Stars earns its 8.5/10 CrazyGames rating through sheer accessibility and multiplayer fun. The 60-second match format, cartoon art style, and same-keyboard 2-player mode hit a sweet spot that few browser games reach. Mad Puffers know this genre โ they have been making big-head sports games since 2014 โ and the polish shows in responsive controls and smooth animations.
However, the game has real shortcomings: there is no tutorial, the AI difficulty is not adjustable, and the control scheme is never explained in-game. Your first match will almost certainly be a confused loss. The 60-second match length, while great for quick sessions, can feel too short for comebacks โ if you fall behind early, the clock becomes your biggest enemy. And the lack of online multiplayer means you need a friend physically present to get the best experience.
Best for: Casual sports fans, office break gaming, anyone with a friend and one keyboard. Not for: Players who want deep career modes, online competition, or realistic basketball simulation.
